The legacy of Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole is a living one. As we look back at a century of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act, we must not forget its future that we represent today. It is a future marked by younger generations who stand on the shoulders of those before them – always connected to the piko that grounds them to their ʻohana and to their ʻāina. Kalanianaʻole’s vision is made real. In the same spirit of intergenerational legacy, this collection of mele builds upon those in the first volume of Mele Hoʻopulapula – in which mele written for ʻāina hoʻopulapula resurfaced for a centennial celebration. Mele Hoʻopulapula, Vol. 2 features 10 new compositions for ʻāina hoʻopulapula across Hawaiʻi. Each composition was a product of a haku mele mentor and mentee – both having meaningful connections to the ʻāina for which they offer their honorific mele. In some cases, the haku mele duo consisted of mother and daughter; older and younger siblings; kumu and haumāna. In all cases, the indispensable value of pilina – relationships – brought these new adorations to life, to voice, and to our Lāhui. Just as these relationships carry forth Kalanianaʻole’s legacy, may these new mele for Panaʻewa, Kealakehe, Paukūkalo, Hoʻolehua, Pālaʻau, Papakōlea, Kalāwahine, Kewalo Uka, Kapolei, Nānākuli, Waiʻanae, and Anahola strengthen our relationship to our ʻāina hoʻopulpaula and thus, to each other. Ola nā pulapula iā Kalanianaʻole!
